Instant Mood Lifters to Try While You're Stuck at Home

Most of us have been holed up in our homes for weeks and months now. And in a time when we’re so used to packing our bags and jetting off whenever we choose to, it can get quite depressing when even supermarket trips now have to be calculated, well-planned moves that include sanitizing gear, amongst many other things.

Lucky for you, you’re armed with your Sugarmat — and a team that’s cheering you on from our quarantined spaces. Here are some instant mood lifters you can do in your home.

WORK OUT

Was there a doubt that this would be our first suggestion? Put down that pint of Ben & Jerry’s, pause Netflix and get to work. There are heaps of video tutorials online for yoga sessions, whether you’re looking for something that incorporates a little bit of HIIT, or something more chilled to help you open up those hip flexors. Throw your favorite Sugarmat on the floor first, of course!

DO SOMETHING NICE FOR SOMEONE ELSE

That feel-good glow when you help a wee grandma with her bag up the stairs? Yeah, we know you can’t do that now, but you can do things like getting groceries for an elderly neighbor, supporting a local cafe by ordering food from them and having the meal sent to a friend you haven’t seen for awhile — the options are limitless. Get creative!

DRINK WATER

This seems like the strangest suggestion — but hear us out. Did you know that even the slightest dehydration can make you more prone to anxiety and sadness? Coupled with impaired performance… it’s just not a good idea. Drink a big glass of water, and then another!

GET SOME SUNLIGHT

We know quarantine conditions are different everywhere, but at the very least, draw your curtains to let in some sun! Sunlight acts as a mood booster and your circadian rhythm, so you get more restful, restorative sleep. Take it up a notch and crack open your windows if you can for some fresh air or step outside for a few minutes throughout the day.

MEDITATE

We know it’s strange when you’re used to finding your zen in your favorite yoga studio, but try to set up a cosy little space for your practice. Whether you’re using the Calm app on your Apple Watch, you’ve downloaded an app, or you’re using a spotify playlist, all it takes is five minutes of clearing your head.

UNPLUGGED SELF CARE

We spend more time than ever on our gadgets and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing since we’re all learning to cope and keep in touch with our loved ones, unplugging is a good thing too. Take time away from your devices, take your thoughts away from your stressors and engage in activities like puzzles, coloring books, games, 3D-models, scrapbooking and crafts, and reading. Get to the book that you’ve been putting off for so long!

DECLUTTER

We’re not saying you should Marie Kondo your home, but when could be a better time to organize your wardrobe, your sock drawer and even your spice rack with expired Trader Joe’s spices you need to replace. When you’re in the middle of it all, you’d wonder why you started — but trust us when we say you’ll feel accomplished you did it all!
